LEARN MORE

All the general information on this site is based on my ever-evolving farming knowledge, which in turn is drawn from personal experience, discussions with other farmers, and stuff I have gleaned from books, articles, websites and seed catalogues.
I try to keep an open, skeptical mind.  If you notice an error, or if you want to share some insights, please e-mail me.
An incomplete list of my favourite farming resources:
The New Organic Grower and Four Season Harvest, by Eliot Coleman
Botany of Desire: A Plant’s Eye View of the World, In Defense of Food, and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan

The Lean Farm, by Ben Hartman

Barns, Sheds, and Outbuildings, originally by O. Judd Co. and since reprinted (from a facsimile!) by Alan C. Hood and Company

All Flesh is Grass, and Letter to a Young Farmer, by Gene Logsdon
Hundred Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating, by Alisa Smith and J.B. Mackinnon
Folks, This Ain't Normal, and You Can Farm, by Joel Salatin
Weeds and What They Tell, by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer
Oh, to Grow: An educational Primer for New Farmers, by Jacinda Fairholm

Call of the Reed Warbler, by Charles Massy
I have learned a lot from programs or articles on the BBC website and various programs on CBC.

I've also learned a thing or two about produce and consumers from my off-farm employer, Byward Fruit Market

The folks who supply my seeds - especially Ellenberger Organic Farm in Coe Hill - have also supplied great information.  They have provided many crucial tips you can't get elsewhere.
I must mention the wealth of information and experience I gained from working with these fine people:

  • Rockdale Farm in Carp, which provided some very interesting insights, and a big confidence boost, when I needed it.
  • Elm Tree Farm, where I did my farming internship.  It was an excellent place to gain organic and biodynamic farming knowledge and skills.  Elmtree's contribution to my knowledge base is incalculable.
