Hello Everyone:
Work is starting to pick up for the season - there are plenty of farm tasks even at this time of year.
I have finished filling the ice compartment of the farm fridge and sealed it up for the summer. This is an exciting project, I look forward to seeing how it will work out.
It is designed on the same principal as ice houses, which homesteads used way back in the day of ice boxes instead of refrigerators. . I have opted to make an ice fridge storage for produce for a couple of reasons:
Keeping costs down - other than running a drill and a sander during building, no electricity required.
The barn is unsuitable for household quality appliances. With all the dust, grit, straw, etc, a nice fridge would be full of grime in no time at all.
The capacity of the food storage compartment is much larger than an average household fridge.
Now that this task is complete, I move on the the next. Sterilizing last years trays is not exactly exciting, but it is necessary to prevent any spread of plant pathogens.
There are restrictions on what kind of cleaning supplies I can use under the organic regime, I have opted for hydrogen peroxide.
Share sales continue, which entails resigning last years customers, fielding inquiries from prospective customers, and distributing flyers. Preparing this seasons Kijiji adverts is another task that is approaching its due date.
